A new Kuzgun missile will join the arsenal of the Turkish Anka drone by the end of the month, Turkish Anadolu Agency quoted Omer Yildiz, deputy director general of Türk Havacılık ve Uzay Sanayii (TUSAŞ) for UAV systems.
Anka is a family of drones developed for the Turkish armed forces. The drone is named after the mythological phoenix, which is called Zümrüd-ü Anka in Turkish. Work on Anka had been underway since 2004. The drone made its first flight in 2010. TUSAŞ said it is developing two modifications of the drone - Anka-A and Anka-B. The first is designed for surveillance, patrol and reconnaissance. Anka-B will be an attack drone armed with missiles and bombs.
The Kuzgun rocket with a jet engine weighs up to 100 kg. The missile can carry a warhead weighing from 60 to 90 kg. The missile is equipped with a solid propulsion system, thanks to which it can overcome long distances.
It is reported that the new missile will complement the MAM-C and MAM-L small-size ammunition that Anka uses. The drone will also be able to carry a Sonobuoy device designed to collect acoustic data in the ocean, and SAR radar to detect sea mines.
