U.S. President Joe Biden on Friday urged China and other major economies to redouble efforts to fight climate change and improve energy security, warning that Russia's invasion of Ukraine had sharpened the need for urgent action, Reuters reported.

At the third virtual meeting of the Major Economies Forum, Biden urged countries to accelerate measures to reduce methane emissions, adopt ambitious zero-emission car goals and work to clean up global shipping.

He also urged countries to spend $90 billion to accelerate the commercialization of clean technologies and to develop new fertilizers that reduce agricultural emissions and improve food security.

Biden also said that it is critical to work together to mitigate the effects of the war that has driven up global food and energy prices.

The meeting is the largest gathering of world leaders on climate change before the global climate conference known as COP27, to be held in November in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

The countries that make up the Major Economies Forum account for about 80 percent of the world's economic output and global greenhouse gas emissions.

Several countries were expected to join with Biden's initiatives, while other countries would announce new 2030 emissions targets, the White House said.
