British Prime Minister Boris Johnson underwent sinus surgery Monday under general anesthesia, the AP reported, citing the Downing Street Press Office.

Johnson's spokesman Max Blain said the British prime minister has returned to his home at 10 Downing Street and is resting after the procedure.

He said the operation had been planned in advance and was performed by medics working for the state-funded National Health Service at a London hospital.

Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab replaced Johnson during the operation.

Johnson, 58, is reportedly scheduled to travel to the Commonwealth Conference in Rwanda later this week and attend the G7 and NATO summits later this month.
