The resignation of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson demonstrates that populism and Brexit were not a good combination, French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said, adding that he personally would not miss Johnson.

A scandal-ridden Johnson announced Thursday he would step down as prime minister after losing the support of his ministers and most conservative lawmakers, but said he would remain until a successor was chosen.

Asked about his reaction to Johnson's decision, Le Maire told France Info radio that this proves that Brexit mixed with populism is not a good cocktail for the nation.

"I personally won't miss him," he said.
