US President Joe Biden said he was stunned, outraged and deeply saddened by the attack on former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and also considers the incident a tragedy for Japan, follows from a message published on the White House website on Friday.

"I am stunned, outraged, and deeply saddened by the news that my friend Abe Shinzo, former Prime Minister of Japan, was shot and killed while campaigning. This is a tragedy for Japan and for all who knew him," Biden said in a statement.

The American president noted that Abe was a supporter of an alliance between the United States and Japan, between the peoples of the two countries.

Shinzo Abe was attacked at around 11:30 local time in the Japanese city of Nara during a street speech by the politician. The attacker, 41-year-old Tetsuya Yamagami, fired two shots behind the politician's back, from over 10 meters. After the second shot, Abe fell. During the attack, he received a gunshot wound to the right side of the neck, which caused bleeding. Bleeding was also recorded in the chest area on the left. Doctors called the possible cause of death of the politician a loss of blood. Abe was 67 years old.

Yamagami was detained on the spot, he later confessed to his deed.
