Pope Francis the First on Sunday expressed solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka, who continue to suffer from political and economic instability, and called for peace in the country, Reuters reported.

"Together with the country's Bishops, I renew my appeal for peace and I implore those who have authority not to ignore the cry of the poor,” the pontiff said in his message to Angelus, speaking from a balcony in St. Peter's Square.

Frustration with the economic crisis reached its peak in Sri Lanka the day before when a huge crowd of protesters broke through armed guards into the presidential palace and occupied it.
