About two-thirds of refugees from Ukraine expect to stay in their host countries until the fighting subsides and the security situation improves, a UNHCR study has found, Reuters reported.

Most refugees from Ukraine, mostly women and children, hope to return home eventually, according to the survey of about 4,900 people from Ukraine currently living in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.

The survey was conducted from mid-May to mid-June. More than 5.6 million refugees are currently registered in Europe, according to the UNHCR. "They are anxious to reunite with friends and family and worry about those who stayed behind. Most want to wait until hostilities have subsided [before returning]," the report said.

Of those who want to return, 40 percent planned to return next month, the UNHCR said, adding that more refugees from Kiev and areas in the west plan to return, compared with those from the east and north of the country.
