Azerbaijan and the EU will sign a document on energy security in the coming days, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said, Interfax reported.

He made the statement at the meeting on the results of the first half of the year, noting that the new agreement will raise the level of cooperation between the parties to a higher level.

Aliyev also recalled that he had repeatedly met and talked on the phone with President of the European Council Charles Michel, and noted that the main topic of these conversations was the normalization of Azerbaijani-Armenian relations.

"However, at the same time there have been extensive discussions about the future development of relations between the European Union and Azerbaijan. This year there has been active cooperation with the EU. As you know, we are working on a new agreement (on strategic partnership, -ed.). Most part of the agreement has been agreed, and the issues that were not agreed upon are being discussed. I hope that in the near future all issues will be coordinated," he said.

The European Commission announced on Friday that EC director Ursula von der Leyen and EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson will visit Azerbaijan on 18 July and hold meetings with the country's leadership. Simson, in particular, will meet with Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov.
