U.S. President Joe Biden marked Ukraine's Independence Day on Wednesday with $3 billion in security assistance, Washington's largest aid package since the Russian-Ukrainian conflict began, Reuters reported.

The United States of America is committed to supporting the people of Ukraine as they continue to fight to defend their sovereignty, Biden said as he announced the aid package.

The roughly $2.98 billion aid will enable Ukraine to acquire air defense systems, artillery systems and munitions, drones and radars for long-term self-defense, he said.

Overall, since the beginning of the Biden administration in January 2021, the United States has provided about $10.6 billion in security assistance to Ukraine. Since 2014, the United States has provided more than $12.6 billion in security assistance to Ukraine.

The new package uses Congressional funding from the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) to allow the Biden administration to purchase weapons from industry rather than take them from existing US stockpiles.
