President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko believes that when adopting the updated Constitution, they should not have dared to suggest that the authorities, especially the president, would be elected at the All-Belarus People's Assembly, he said during a meeting on the development of civil society and the work of parties and public associations, BelTA informs.
"I keep coming back to what I was leaving when the Constitution was adopted. I have been studying the system of party formation and election bodies all over the world. We shouldn't have dared to offer people to elect the authority, especially the president, at the All-Belarusian People's Assembly," said the Belarusian leader.
Lukashenko pointed out that the presidential election is a rocking situation to some extent, and a number of countries have a different system. For example, in China, where the head of the country is elected by the National People's Congress (NPC).
According to the President of Belarus, on the one hand, he did not take this step not to deprive people of their right to choose. "Today, I feel that we have not gone from this life for nothing. We would have survived it. But we would have worked quietly. And parliament would have been elected by districts, as we were elected. But we've already missed that. It is not a catastrophe. If there is a need we will come back to it. But not now, and maybe we will not go back to it," stated Lukashenko.
On the other hand, said Alexander Lukashenko, he could be accused of being afraid of the people and of wanting to hold on to his chair. "I have never had such a goal. No, and never will be. It is not my main goal to keep power, as they say. There is no such problem at all," he stressed.
