The trilateral working group consisting of representatives of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia has made significant progress in reaching agreements on the issue of unblocking transport links in the South Caucasus. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told a press conference on Wednesday following talks with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian, TASS reported.

According to the Russian minister, the group is working rhythmically in parallel with meetings on border delimitation between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

"This trilateral working group, created by the decision of the three presidents of November 9, 2020, has made significant progress in reaching agreements. They will hopefully be formalized in the very near future. "What is particularly important is that this work is not carried out in a vacuum, not in isolation, but in close coordination with broader transport projects, including the North-South corridor project, in which our Iranian partners are also interested," he said.

Lavrov added that during today's meeting the sides [with Abdollahian] discussed, among other things, the restoration of a small railroad section on the Resht-Astara highway. Discussions between Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia are ongoing on this issue.

In turn, Abdollahian noted that Iran has a very privileged geopolitical position.

"We perceive strengthening of transit routes, including diversified North-South lines, as an important factor for development, as well as for food security in this region," he added.

The Iranian Foreign Minister also expressed the country's readiness to complete the construction of the unfinished Resht-Astara section.
