The creation of the Ministry of Internal Affairs was necessary. Deputy Chief of Police Ara Fidanyan stated this at the press briefing after Thursday’s Cabinet meeting of the government of Armenia.

Fidanyan responded to the remark that the Police of Armenia will now be politicized because the Ministry of Internal Affairs is a political structure.

"Yes, the police are a depoliticized structure, and after the establishment of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Police will also remain a depoliticized structure, whereas the political responsibility will fall on the Ministry of Internal Affairs. There we have taken into account even the matters related to the appointment of the chief of police; he will be appointed by the Prime Minister again, not the Minister of Internal Affairs. Also other circumstances, which will not separate them from the Ministry of Internal Affairs as much as possible, but will ensure their being depoliticized. The Ministry of Internal Affairs will develop a policy on the fight against specific areas of crime, a policy on ensuring the safer provision of public order, and the police will implement this policy,” Fidanyan said.

The deputy chief of Police added that he has no information about who may be appointed Minister of Internal Affairs.
