Dutch aluminum producer Aldel on Friday said it would mothball the remaining capacity at its Farmsum facility, citing continued high energy prices and a lack of government support, Reuters reported.
Aldel joins a growing list of companies cutting or shutting down production in Europe as gas and electricity prices soar hundreds of percent this year compared to 2021 levels.
Norway's Yara has cut ammonia production, steelmaker ArcelorMittal is shutting down one of its furnaces in Bremen, and Belgian zinc smelter Nyrstar is shutting down a smelter in the Netherlands.
Among aluminum producers, Slovenian Talum has cut capacity by 80%, and Alcoa is cutting one of three production lines at its Lista plant in Norway.
The company stopped primary production at the Delfzijl plant in the Netherlands in October 2021 but continued to produce recycled aluminium.
Aldel, the only primary aluminum producer in the Netherlands, has the capacity to produce 110,000 tons of primary aluminum and 50,000 tons of recycled aluminum per year.
After bankruptcy and change of ownership in recent years, the company employs about 200 employees. Its full name is Damco Aluminum Delfzijl Cooperatie U.A.
