Turkish court has ordered the pre-trial detention of MP Semra Guzel on terrorism charges, Reuters reported, citing Istanbul police and Guzel's lawyer.

Guzel was detained in Istanbul on Friday and a court ordered her imprisonment pending trial late Saturday, Istanbul police said, according to a prosecutor's request.

Guzel's lawyer, Veysi Eski, said the charges against Güzel were unfounded and called them a continuation of "political genocide operations" against the HDP.

"A person visiting an acquaintance in the organisation (PKK) camp does not in and of itself constitute the crime of membership of (a terrorist) organisation," Eski told Reuters.

Meanwhile, Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu announced the detention Friday, saying Guzel had been "busted."

"Our member of parliament being detained in an unethical way; the government making this into propaganda material using inappropriate and ugly language shows the ruling party's helplessness," the HDP said in a statement. 

Semra Guzel, a member of the Democratic Party of the Peoples, was stripped of her parliamentary immunity in March when photos of her with a member of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) taken several years ago circulated in the Turkish media. A warrant was subsequently issued for her arrest on charges of membership in a terrorist organization.

When the photos first surfaced in January, Guzel said the man was her fiancé, and the photos were taken when she visited him during the peace process between the Turkish state and the PKK, which broke down in 2015.

According to Guzel, the investigation against her, based on materials found after her fiancé's murder in 2017, was launched a year after she was elected to parliament.
