Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia Aram I was elected chairman of the World Council of Churches, the official Facebook page of the Great House of Cilicia reported.

In this position, His Holiness Aram I will represent the Eastern Orthodox Churches. Commenting on his election, Aram I in particular said that he intends to give a new impetus to the inter-church movement.

Note that Aram I was chairman of the central and executive boards of the World Council of Churches from 1991-1998 and from 1998-2006.
