Disagreements with Turkey over Sweden's and Finland's accession to the North Atlantic Alliance are still in place, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated.

He stressed that previously the controversial issues have always been solved and the have always been able to overcome these differences, take measures together and implement them together.

He also said that Sweden and Finland's accession process to NATO is the fastest in history: So far, 24 out of 30 NATO countries, including the US, have already ratified the accession protocol. Stoltenberg said it is also important to take the security concerns of all NATO countries seriously, because no other NATO country has faced as many terrorist attacks as Turkey.

In June 2022, Sweden, Finland and Turkey signed a memorandum allowing Sweden and Finland to begin the process of joining NATO.
