King Charles III has been proclaimed the new head of state of Australia, The Canberra Times reports.

Charles III became king immediately after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, but the king's representative, Governor General David Hurley, made the proclamation of enthronement at a special meeting of the Federal Executive Council at Government House.

This was followed by a historic public reading of the new sovereign's proclamation outside Parliament, a first-nation smoking ceremony, a royal salute from 21 cannons.

The official proclamation of Charles III as the new king of New Zealand took place today in Parliament. The king was officially proclaimed in a ceremony, Radio New Zealand reported.

The day before, Charles III was also proclaimed King of Canada.

The official ceremony proclaiming 73-year-old Charles III as king of Great Britain took place on September 10 at St. James's Palace. He succeeded his mother on the British throne, Queen Elizabeth II, who died on September 8 at the age of 96. She ruled the country for 70 years.
