Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron have held telephone talks, during which they discussed the situation around Ukraine, as well as the safety of the Zaporizhzhya NPP, the Kremlin press service reports.

The talks took place at the initiative of the French side.

The Russian president told Macron that Ukraine is using Western weapons to hit civilian infrastructure and the Zaporizhzhya NPP.

"A detailed and frank exchange of views on the situation in Ukraine was held, with a focus on the safety of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant (ZNPP)," the Kremlin said in a statement.

The sixth and last unit of the Zaporizhzhya NPP in Energodar in the Russian-controlled part of the Zaporizhzhya region was shut down on Sunday night.

Zaporizhzhya NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. It consists of six VVER-1000 power units. Recently only the fifth and sixth units have been operating. Due to damage caused by AFU shelling, one of them was shut down, while the other was in the mode of scheduled unloading with minimal output power. This week, power from the nuclear power plant was lost both in Russian-controlled territory and in Ukraine.

At the beginning of September, an IAEA mission visited Zaporizhzhya NPP. Some of the agency's experts left with IAEA head Rafael Grossi. Two experts remained at the plant.

Later the IAEA presented a report on the results of the inspection of Zaporizhzhya NPP, which, in particular, pointed to the need to stop military activities and create a safety zone in the area.
