Yerevan hopes that the CSTO mission will play an important role in stabilizing the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopirkin said this Friday during a meeting with Anatoly Sidorov, Chief of the CSTO Joint Staff, RIA Novosti reported.
"They [i.e., Armenia] attach special importance to your mission here. They hope that the Collective Security Treaty Organization will play an important role in stabilizing the situation, launching steps to prevent further escalation of the situation," the ambassador said.
According to him, society and various political forces in Armenia are closely following the work of the CSTO mission.
"Here they remember that the organization played a key role in stabilizing the situation in Kazakhstan at the beginning of this year. Important note: Armenia now chairs the CSTO," said the Russian diplomat.
Kopirkin wished success to the CSTO mission in achieving concrete results.
"It will undoubtedly work in favor of strengthening the standing of the organization, both in the Republic of Armenia and in the region," he emphasized.
The CSTO Collective Security Council has reached an agreement to send a CSTO mission, led by Secretary General Stanislav Zas, to Armenia. And the proposal to send this mission to Armenia was made by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
