The observance of the ceasefire on the border shows that neither Armenia nor Azerbaijan had the intention of large-scale escalation, Azerbaijani head of state Ilham Aliyev said at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, RIA Novosti reported.

Aliyev also thanked Putin for his quick response to the escalation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. "I would like to express my gratitude to you for your prompt response to the aggravation, escalation in the Armenian-Azerbaijani border zone. The fighting lasted less than eight hours, and the fact that it stopped, although not immediately the Armenian side began to comply with the ceasefire, but in general about two days the ceasefire has been respected, indicates that neither Armenia nor Azerbaijan had any intention of large-scale escalation," Aliyev said.

Noting that, unfortunately, border conflicts do occur, the Azerbaijani leader added that the latest events on the border with Armenia involved numerous casualties from both sides, but "the main thing is that we managed to stabilize the situation and move it into a peaceful direction."

"According to the information, which I receive from the places, the situation is stable for about two days, now the main thing is not to destroy the starting process of the normalization of the relations and to move in this direction," the President of Azerbaijan emphasized.

Aliyev welcomed Russia's efforts to this end, including within the framework of the trilateral commission. "I would like to say once again that Azerbaijan is committed to the trilateral documents that were signed between Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia after the second Karabakh war, and we will do everything to ensure that the situation in the Caucasus is stable," he concluded.
