Washington intends to present in the near future an updated strategy for the Arctic, the document will take into account the latest actions of China and Russia in the region, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Doug Jones said.

Jones said they are working on an updated national strategy for the Arctic and he hopes it will be published soon.

He said the document will also take into account ongoing climate change and growing geopolitical competition with Russia and China.

Earlier, Mikhail Popov, Deputy Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, stated that the U.S. is trying to challenge the legitimate rights of Russia in the Arctic, to gain unhindered access to the resources of the region and the Northern Sea Route.

Earlier it was reported that the NATO StratCom COE will analyze the attempts of the states to exert influence in the Arctic. The final report should also analyze in detail the discourse around the Russian chairmanship of the Arctic Council, which chairs it from 2021 to 2023.
