Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has approved amendments to the republic's constitution that establish a one-time presidential mandate of seven years and change the name of the capital from Nur-Sultan to Astana, MK reported with reference to the press service of the Kazakh president.

Previously, Tokayev proposed the change in the constitution in early September during an address to the nation. He also suggested holding an early presidential election as early as this autumn.

Tokayev was elected president on March 20, 2019. His first five-year presidential term was due to end in 2021. If he wins the election now according to the new law, he will stay in power until autumn 2029.
