The price of gold falls Monday morning below $1,680 a troy ounce, held back by a strengthening dollar, while markets continue to wait for a rate decision from the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed), trading data showed.

The price of December gold futures on the Comex New York exchange was down $6.65, or 0.4%, to $1,676.85 a troy ounce. December silver futures were up 0.24% to $19.462 an ounce.

The dollar index (exchange rate against a basket of currencies of the six U.S. trading partners) rose 0.06% to 109.83 points. The dollar's appreciation makes gold less available for purchase in other currencies.
