If Azerbaijan wanted to open a corridor to Nakhchivan, it would do so, Russian military expert Pavel Felgenhauer told NEWS.am.

According to his assessment, Azerbaijan has opportunities to break through the defenses and reach Nakhchivan.

"In general, they can do it. Another thing is that this would lead to more serious hostilities, to a direct confrontation between Azerbaijan and Russia, because there are Russian border guards there. Although it would be possible to bypass them, but in any case it could lead to a conflict with Russia. Azerbaijan seems not to be ready for that yet", the expert added.

He mentioned that Iran is also cautiously observing the situation, reminding that Tehran has not bad relations with Armenia.

"In addition, Iran is suspicious of Azerbaijan because of its close military-technical relations with Israel.

However, Iran's direct military intervention in these processes is not obvious. They have other problems, and what is happening in the Transcaucasus for them is primarily projected onto what is happening in other directions, in Syria, Lebanon, the Persian Gulf. The main thing for them is the confrontation with the United States and Israel. For Iran, all this is a single set of problems," Felgenhauer stressed.

Before and after the start of Azerbaijan's military aggression against Armenia on September 13, the Iranian authorities, including at the highest level, pointed to the unacceptability of border changes between Armenia and Azerbaijan and Tehran's readiness to respond to such changes.

The Russian side, in turn, advocated the cessation of hostilities and the implementation of the trilateral statements signed by Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan.
