British Prime Minister Liz Truss is considering moving the British embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, Politico reports.
Truss told her Israeli counterpart Yair Lapid "about her review of the current location of the British embassy in Israel."
Truss had already talked about it during the campaign. She raised the issue during a meeting with Lapid in New York during the UN General Assembly.
The British Embassy in Israel is currently located in Tel Aviv, as is virtually every country except the United States. Former U.S. President Donald Trump moved the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem in 2018. Theresa May, then the Conservative British prime minister, criticized the move. Moving embassies is a very sensitive issue, since both Israelis and Palestinians consider Jerusalem their capital.
Protests against Trump's actions have led to the deaths of dozens of Palestinians. Honduras and Guatemala followed the U.S. lead and moved their embassy to Jerusalem, and Kosovo opened its embassy in the city in 2021.
