The United States is playing a positive role in deterring new attacks by Azerbaijan against Armenia. This was stated by UK journalist Thomas de Waal, who is also a senior fellow with Carnegie Europe specializing in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus region, reported the RFE/RL Armenian Service.

It is positive to see the personal engagement by two of Washington's top foreign policy officials, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, de Waal said.

A few months ago, we also saw the rather mysterious visit by US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director William Burns, and noted maybe it wasn't directly related to the conflict, but he is certainly someone who understands the issue quite well, de Waal added.

So, the Americans know this issue, they are focused on it, the analyst noted, continuing that their levers are not very powerful, but he believes that the Americans make it clear that they will be greatly angered if there is a military action by Azerbaijan.

De Waal stated, however, that he is not sure if it will be a major military action, but he believes that it is bad in itself because it weakens the peace process, undermines the possibilities of settlement, and of course, mainly because people die.

But he does not think that we are on the threshold of a new large-scale war, and here, he believes the international opposition would be strong. It is more about this combination of force and diplomacy on the part of Azerbaijan, which it uses to try to achieve the results imagined by President Aliyev, Thomas de Waal concluded.
