Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar discussed the situation in Ukraine by telephone with his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu, RIA Novosti reported.

"National Defense Minister Hulusi Akar held a telephone conversation with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. During the conversation, Minister Akar discussed bilateral and regional defense and security issues with his Russian counterpart, particularly the situation in Ukraine and Syria... The importance of an urgent ceasefire to prevent further loss of life and restore peace and stability in the region was stressed, and the parties' common understanding on the ceasefire was noted with satisfaction," the Turkish defense ministry reported.

"Special attention during the talks was paid to the development of successful grain shipments (from Ukrainian ports - ed.). Once again, it was stated that Turkey, which provides all kinds of support in the field of humanitarian aid, is ready to contribute to peace in the region, as it has done so far," the report added.

The sides reportedly discussed the situation in Syria, stressing that "the constant prevention of the terrorist threat ... and the neutralization of terrorist organizations is Ankara's top priority."

"The importance of adhering to previous agreements on the issue was reiterated."
