Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has warned that the electricity price cap called for by the opposition could lead to electricity sales in other markets and blackouts in Belgium.
The Belgian government has been pushing for a pan-European cap on electricity prices since March, but so far the continent has failed to find a common approach to fighting rising energy prices.
Belgium's geographic location also needs to be considered because of its interconnectedness with its neighbors. In Spain, for example, the country is more or less an island from an energy point of view, you can limit electricity prices here, De Croo said.
Earlier, the federal government announced energy cuts in public buildings and a profit tax on energy companies such as Engie and TotalEnergies.
The statistical office Eurostat said earlier this year that Belgium has the highest energy inflation in the bloc.
