France's position on achieving peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan remains unchanged, the French foreign ministry announced, RFE/RL reports.

Reporters had asked how the French government responds to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who had slammed French President Emmanuel Macron and claimed that Macron "used street language" in an interview with France 2 television and can no longer be an impartial mediator in normalizing Armenian-Azerbaijani relations.

In that interview, Macron claimed that Russia is destabilizing the situation in the South Caucasus and playing the “game” of Azerbaijan—and with Turkey's participation.

"These words of President Aliyev in no way detract from France's efforts to contribute in full force to the Armenian-Azerbaijan normalization. Thanks to the commitment by the president of the [French] republic, it became possible to organize a quadrilateral meeting on October 6—with the participation of President Aliyev, head of the European Council Charles Michel, and [Armenian] Prime Minister Pashinyan," the French MFA stated, adding that Paris fully supports the initiative that has started with the European Union, the goal of which is to sign a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
