French President Emmanuel Macron said Germany should not isolate itself in Europe.

"I don't think it's good for Germany or for Europe if it isolates itself," he said on arrival in Brussels.

Macron said he was determined to preserve Franco-German "friendship and alliance" at a time when relations between the two countries are going through a difficult period. "For me, my wish has always been to preserve European unity and also the friendship and the alliance between France and Germany," he said.

Accumulated disagreements between Paris and Berlin led to the postponement to January of a Franco-German ministerial council meeting scheduled for Oct. 26 in Fontainebleau.

Macron said he had always considered it his duty to make sure that they find ways of agreement between Germany and France, which would then allow to build European agreements.
