The crossroads of the main international transport corridors "North-South" and "East-West" are forming today in the South Caucasus. If it is created, the economies of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia will begin to receive additional rent associated with the advantage of their geographical location in Eurasia. Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Alexey Overchuk made the statement speaking at the plenary session of the International Export Forum "Made in Russia - 2022".

"A significant role in this regard will be played by unblocking the transport communication between the western regions of Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan through the territory of Armenia or Iran.

Today, Azerbaijan and Iran have begun building bridges on the border, which will connect the roads of the two countries and provide the shortest and most convenient traffic between the western regions of Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan. The construction of the railway and road through Meghri on the territory of Armenia, whose sovereignty is not questioned by anyone, depends on the position of Armenia. At the same time, a road bypassing Armenia is already being built through Iran, i.e. there will be a road by about 2024, and it will provide access to markets of Iran, Turkey and further to Europe.

To a large extent, the infrastructure of the international transport corridor "North-South" already exists and is used for road and rail transportation. However, it does not meet the expected increase in traffic and needs to be modernized and its capacity expanded.

In this regard, we are completing the modernization of checkpoints on the Russian-Azerbaijani border," he noted.
