Rishi Sunak has confirmed his candidacy for the post of UK Prime Minister.

“The United Kingdom is a great country but we face a profound economic crisis. That’s why I am standing to be Leader of the Conservative Party and your next Prime Minister,” the former Chancellor of the Exchequer wrote on Twitter.

Even before Sunday's announcement, however, Sunak had received more support from the fellow Conservative Party lawmakers than his opponents: former defense secretary Penny Mordaunt and former prime minister Boris Johnson.

“There will be integrity, professionalism and accountability at every level of the government I lead and I will work day in and day out to get the job done,” Sunak added, and asked for a chance to resolve UK’s problems.
