The World Bank said Monday it has given Ukraine an additional $500 million to help the country meet urgent spending needs caused by the Russian invasion and ongoing war, the Voice of America reported.
Funding from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the main lending arm of the World Bank, was backed by a $500 million loan guarantee from Britain that was announced Sept. 30, the organization said in a statement.
The loan came on the eve of a conference on Ukraine's reconstruction Tuesday in Berlin, during which national leaders, development experts and business leaders will discuss how to rebuild Ukraine after the war ends.
The Russian invasion continues to cause massive destruction of Ukrainian infrastructure, including water, sewage and electricity networks, while winter approaches, putting the Ukrainian people even more at risk, said World Bank President David Malpass.
The new round of funding allocated today will be used to maintain basic public services. We are determined to support the Ukrainian people as they face this unprecedented crisis, the statement said.
The World Bank has provided a total of $13 billion in emergency financing for Ukraine, of which $11.4 billion has been fully disbursed.
