The observation mission will allow easing the tension, head of the EU delegation to Armenia, Ambassador Andrea Wiktorin told reporters on Wednesday.

The EU Technical Assessment Mission began last week, which should then be handed over to the EU Monitoring Mission. There has been very positive cooperation with the Armenian authorities, Wiktorin noted.

Asked whether the presence of EU monitors will help ensure that there is no shooting on the border, the Ambassador noted that the format of the monitors is to observe and report directly to the headquarters. The deployment of this EU monitoring mission is already a big step forward, she noted.

Wiktorin expressed hope that it will ease borders tensions and that it will serve as a confidence-building function, which will also allow for a smoother process of signing a peace treaty in the future.
