Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov on Wednesday met with the heads of diplomatic missions of European Union (EU) member countries accredited in Baku. This is stated in a press release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Azerbaijan—and which was disseminated by the Azerbaijani media.

Thus, it is reported that an exchange of views took place between Azerbaijan and the EU regarding the current agenda of cooperation in political, economic, energy, investment, education and some other domains, as well as regarding the situation in the region.

Bayramov spoke about the role of Azerbaijan in ensuring Europe's energy security and diversification of energy supply. In this regard, the importance of signing the memorandum of understanding on July 18—which envisages the doubling of Azerbaijani natural gas transportation amount to the EU, as well as the expansion of cooperation in the development of alternative energy sources—was emphasized.

According to the Azerbaijani FM, there is a broad energy potential in the "liberated" territories, and Azerbaijan is already implementing a number of projects for the effective use of this potential.

Also, Bayramov pointed to the potential of cooperation in investments and trade, and noted Azerbaijan's efforts to develop the East-West transport corridor.

"In this context, Bayramov noted that the steps taken by Azerbaijan to open communications in the region, including the launch of the Zangazur [(Zangezur)] corridor, contradict Armenia's non-constructive position. The minister informed the attendees about the processes of normalization of relations, the signing of a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia, steps aimed at the reintegration of the Armenian population living in the region," the aforesaid press release adds.

In response, Peter Michalko, head of the EU delegation in Azerbaijan, noted that "high-level contacts play an important role in the development of cooperation. In this regard, they expressed confidence that the early completion of the draft of the new agreement between Azerbaijan and the European Union will make an important contribution to the further development of relations," the Azerbaijani MFA added.
