There was a crush on the Itaewon Walking Street in downtown Seoul on Saturday during Halloween festivities. The accident killed 151 people and injured at least 82.
According to police estimates, about 100,000 people gathered in the Itaewon area, where many bars, restaurants and clubs are concentrated, on Saturday.
The stampede began around 10:20 p.m. local time (4:20 p.m. Moscow time) in the narrow pedestrian streets near the Hamilton Hotel, which is located near the Itaewon subway station.
The incident killed 151 and injured at least 82 people, of whom 19 were hospitalized in serious condition.
The dead include 97 women and 54 men, most of them under the age of 30.
According to the Yonhap news agency, at least 19 foreigners, including citizens of Iran, China, Norway and Uzbekistan became victims of the stampede.
The Russian embassy in South Korea reported the death of three Russian women as a result of the incident.
According to a representative of the rescue services in Seoul, 15 foreign nationals were injured.
Authorities in Seoul have received about 355 reports of people missing in connection with the crush.
The vast majority of the dead and injured are young people between the ages of 18 and 30, of whom nearly two-thirds are women.
YTN television channel cited a celebrity appearance in a bar as the cause of the crush.
According to the KBS TV channel, the reason for the tragedy was the inappropriate behavior of people who were allegedly handed candy with drugs in a club.
According to TASS correspondent, several hundred residents of South Korea and tourists at 03:00 local time continued to rest in the area of Itaewon after the incident.
According to KBS, Republic of Korea police identified 140 of the 151 people who died in the stampede.
Yonhap News Agency reported that nearby establishments did not let people in during the crush.
More than 1,700 medics and rescuers and 140 ambulances and firefighters were sent to the scene.
According to YTN, rescuers performed CPR right on the street. Some 70 people reportedly died at the scene, while others died on the road or in hospitals.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo urged medics to provide the necessary care for the victims.
Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon decided to cut short his trip to Europe.
Yoon Suk-yeol called an emergency meeting about the incident, which was attended by the heads of the national and Seoul interior ministries and other representatives of operational and rescue services.
The South Korean leader urged to promptly identify all the dead and injured and inform their relatives, and promised to assist in the organization of the funeral and conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
The country has declared national mourning. It will last until November 5 inclusive.
