The process of approval by the United States of the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey is "progressing well" and can be completed within a few months, Ibrahim Kalın said, spokesman for the Turkish President.

In October 2021, Turkey asked the United States to buy 40 F-16 fighter jets and nearly 80 upgrade kits for its existing combat aircraft, after the purchase of the F-35 failed.

According to Kalin, President Joe Biden's administration is "making a sincere effort on this issue. "It's not very easy to give a clear prediction, but there seems to be a high probability that the process will be completed in the next month or two," Kalin said, when asked if the United States would sell F-16s to Turkey.

In September, Erdogan said he had received "positive" feedback from two U.S. senators he met with in New York about their possible support for the sale.

Sentiment in the U.S. Congress toward Turkey has deteriorated over the past few years after Ankara purchased Russian S-400 air defense systems.
