Japan has offered to host Australian nuclear submarines. Ambassador Shingo Yamagami said Japan is willing to cooperate on advanced technologies as part of a military agreement between Australia, the United States and Britain, AAP reported.
Yamagami acknowledged that Japan's place in the trilateral security pact may not be immediately obvious, but national security is tied to the allies' ability to deter potential adversaries.
Australia will acquire nuclear-powered submarines under the agreement, and Japan has offered to host them. Such submarines will strengthen regional deterrence, Yamagami said. Some arrangements have already been made to receive them.
Assistant Secretary of Defense Matt Thistlethwaite said Japan is an important partner in the region when it comes to ensuring peace and stability.
The Quad includes Australia, India and the United States, with a focus on security in the Indo-Pacific region.
Yamagami echoed the words of his prime minister, Fumio Kishida, that Ukraine today could become East Asia tomorrow.
Without directly referring to China as a threat, Yamagami stated the need for alliances to manage a more dangerous region.
