Azerbaijan's First Lady and First Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva unexpectedly decided to take offense at UNESCO.

According to Azerbaijani media reports, Aliyeva has ceased her activity as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, which she notified in a letter to the UNESCO Director General and former French Minister of Culture Audrey Azoulay.

Baku has suddenly forgotten the repeatedly expressed at meetings "satisfaction with the development of cooperation between Azerbaijan and UNESCO in science and education, and stressed the importance of projects implemented in this area through UNESCO," and decided to remind Azoulay of her origins.

"This decision of Mehriban Aliyeva in diplomatic language is a kind of protest against the dual approach of UNESCO to Azerbaijan, especially in recent years," a publication close to the Aliyev administration explains to the confused. Having hindered the UNESCO mission all these years, Baku blames UNESCO itself that the visit is still not organized.

However, the real reason for "resentment" is that Azoulay is from France. As stated in the letter of Aliyeva, "the basis of the approaches of Audrey Azoulay is the French smear campaign against Azerbaijan and its contradictory position on Baku."

Meanwhile, today the French Senate is going to discuss the resolution on sanctions against Azerbaijan. Thus, Mehriban Aliyeva's decision to "be offended" by France and UNESCO is nothing more than an attempt to make a preventive step. Actually, the fact that the first vice president of the country which committed mass crimes against humanity is the goodwill ambassador of UNESCO is simply a shame for this organization. And the sooner the mistake is corrected, the better for UNESCO itself.
