The South Caucasus is a strategic transport hub for Eurasia, where communication and trade routes cross from East to West and from South to North, said Ivan Nechayev, deputy head of the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
According to him, the world is passing through a complex stage of multipolarity. "This is manifested, in particular, in the dispersal of economic power and the strengthening of Western centers of political decision-making. The focus of global economic activity has already shifted to the Asia-Pacific region. The need to adapt the entire system of international relations to the realities of a multipolar world order is obvious. A global restructuring is coming. If we do not want revolutionary shocks, it is in all our interests to assist this process. In such circumstances, the Russian initiative on the Greater Eurasian Partnership makes special sense. The absurd sanctions policy of Western countries, which provoked the global economic crisis, stimulates the interest of the states of the continent to strengthen cooperation, find new forms and ways of cooperation in the financial and economic, transport and logistics and other spheres.
Speaking of Greater Eurasia, we first and foremost mean the formation of a continent-wide integration contour. Multilateral structures and free trade area agreements existing in Eurasia could form its basis. Russia is very actively involved in the process of creating the Greater Eurasian Partnership. Russia is working on the conjugation of the EAEU development plans and the Chinese initiative "One Belt, One Road". We are rapidly modernizing and increasing the capacity of the Trans-Siberian and Baikal-Amur Mainlines, building transport international corridors North-South and Europe-Western China, and developing transport and logistics infrastructure in the Caspian region. This is what will make up the infrastructure framework of the future Greater Eurasia.
The South Caucasus is a strategic transportation hub for Eurasia, where trade routes from East to West and from South to North intersect. It is undoubtedly important to implement joint logistical projects, including the further development of the North-South corridor. We welcome the efforts of the Armenian and Azerbaijani sides to unblock all transport and economic communications in the region for their prompt launch. Last year, we established a special platform - the regional consultative platform "3+3", which also discusses all these issues. The development of communications will contribute to the agreement that came into force last year between the Caspian states on cooperation in the field of transport. Its implementation is aimed at turning the Caspian Sea region into a large international logistics hub... We have always paid priority attention to interaction with the South Caucasus states. We have a common history and multifaceted economic relations," he said.
