Finland's government is proposing to allocate 139 million euros for the construction of fences along the country's border with Russia, Reuters reported.

The Nordic country said in June that it would build fences along parts of the Russian border to strengthen preparedness for "hybrid threats," such as a potential mass influx of asylum seekers.

The preparedness bill, though contested in terms of European Union asylum rules, passed in July by a qualified majority, allowing parliament to fast-track legislation.

The country's border service said it eventually intends to build 130 to 260 kilometers of fences covering 10 to 20 percent of the total length, focusing primarily on border crossings and adjacent areas in southeast Finland.

Before the spending proposal, the parliament had allocated only 6 million euros for the pilot project.
