The Supreme Court of Justice of Moldova has released from house arrest ex-President Igor Dodon accused of corruption, RIA Novosti reports.

A criminal case against the former Moldovan president began in October. The hearing is being held at the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ). According to the charges brought against the ex-president, he is accused of taking a bribe of up to $1 million from the former leader of the Democratic Party, oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc. The money was allegedly demanded by the ex-president to pay the current expenses of the political party Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM), including the salaries of its employees. The lawyers' request for his release was considered on Friday.

"The Supreme Court of Justice ruled to grant the lawyers' request and to release Igor Dodon from house arrest," reads the court's decision read out at the hearing.

At the same time, Dodon will be under legal supervision and will be obliged to appear before prosecutors at the first request.

Dodon has been under house arrest since late May. The former president completely denies his guilt and believes that the cases against him are politically motivated.
