Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince has canceled his first visit to Japan in three years. According to TBS television, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

It is not yet clear why the visit was canceled. On Friday, the prince was in Thailand for a meeting of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders and met with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

The Japan External Trade Organization said that Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Investment had asked it to cancel the Vision 2030 business forum scheduled for Nov. 21.

According to data compiled by Bloomberg, Japan is one of Saudi Arabia's most important economic partners, with about $34 billion in trade between them last year. The kingdom is Japan's largest supplier of crude oil, selling about 1 million barrels a day.

Last month, the Saudi government said doctors had advised the prince to refrain from long-haul and nonstop plane flights because of ear problems. He missed the Arab League summit in Algeria and also did not go to India earlier in November.

Nevertheless, he flew to the G-20 summit in Indonesia this week and went to South Korea on Thursday. There he met with President Yoon Seok-yeol and local businessmen.
