According to the will of NATO member states, Jens Stoltenberg is to remain secretary general of the North Atlantic Alliance. There is an informal agreement between 30 countries to extend his term of office until April 2024, Welt am Sonntag reported, citing sources in diplomatic circles. In fact, Stoltenberg's term of office should end on September 30 this year.

The reason for the planned extension of the term of office, which must be formally decided in the spring, was that Stoltenberg has achieved outstanding achievements for NATO, especially against the background of the war in Ukraine, the media noted.

Extending Stoltenberg's term would also guarantee stability at the head of the alliance in difficult times. Member states also want to give Stoltenberg the opportunity to chair the 75th anniversary NATO summit scheduled for April 2024 in Washington. 

Welt am Sonntag wrote that after leaving the post of NATO Secretary General, Stoltenberg had good chances to become president of the World Bank. 

The term of office of current World Bank President David Malpass ends next April.
