A trilateral meeting between the U.S. Secretary of State, Azerbaijani President and Armenian Prime Minister was held in Munich in the margins of the annual security conference. This forum is traditionally a focus of attention. It is widely seen as a review of ideas concerning the prospects of global politics. It is quite symbolic that in Munich Western leaders are making plans to counteract Russian revisionism which main features were highlighted by Vladimir Putin in the capital of Bavaria, Sergei Markedonov, a leading researcher at the Center for Euro-Atlantic Security at the Institute of International Studies at MGIMO, wrote on his Telegram.

"In such a context, the talks between Antony Blinken, Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan were perceived by many commentators as a kind of bid by the United States and its allies to establish their dominance in the process of the Armenian-Azerbaijani settlement. There is a lot of evidence in favor of such a conclusion. Russia is not participating in Munich forum (for the second year in a row). The competition between it and the West (the USA and the EU) for the Caucasus after 2022 has sharply increased. Blinken himself was not stingy with promising statements. Thus, according to the American secretary of state, "Azerbaijan and Armenia have a truly historic opportunity to establish a lasting peace after more than thirty years of conflict. He also promised Washington's full support for Baku and Yerevan on this path," Markedonov noted.
