The U.S. Department of Defense Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) launched an investigation this week into a reported leak of confidential but unclassified emails on the unit's server.

USSOCOM is a Defense Department unit that conducts and oversees special operations in branches of the military such as the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force.

The open server was secured Monday after being exposed for the past two weeks, according to TechCrunch, which first reported the leak.

According to TechCrunch, a security bug left the server without a password, meaning anyone on the Internet could access the data through the server's IP address.

USSOCOM spokesman Ken McGraw told TechCrunch that there was no indication that anyone had hacked into the unit's information systems.
