Incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the joint candidate from the Republican Bloc, has officially been nominated as a presidential candidate in the upcoming elections in Turkey.

The representatives of Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), which is part of the coalition government, submitted the respective application to the Supreme Election Council of Turkey.

The country’s presidential and parliamentary elections are slated for May 14.

The serving president’s main challenger in the elections will  be Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the leader of the Republican People's Party (CHP) and joint candidate of the opposition People's Bloc.
