Militants attacked a checkpoint in the northwestern part of Pakistan, along its border with Afghanistan, leading to a shootout that killed three soldiers and three militants, leaving another four militants wounded, The Associated Press reports, citing the army.

The shootout took place at night in the Miran Shah tribal zone in the North Waziristan region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which used to be the garrison of Pakistani Taliban, a militant group also known as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP.
Although the army claims to have cleared North Waziristan of militants, periodic attacks and gunfire continue, raising fears that the TTP is regrouping in the area.
