The dates for opening a Russian consulate general in Kapan city of Armenia’s Syunik Province have not been specified yet, but the Russian side is trying to speed up the process. Maksim Seleznyov, a counselor-envoy at the Russian embassy in Yerevan, told about this to Sputnik Armenia.
"There are no timeframes yet, but we are trying to open it as soon as possible. Together with our colleagues in Moscow and the municipality of Kapan, we have already studied today the areas that may suit us. I want to say that there are already several decisions with which we will continue to work in the future," said the diplomat.
According to him, a consulate general has two main functions: consular services, and political function.
"We will be closer to the people, the [Kapan] city authorities, the [Syunik province]. I will not hide: the Russian presence here is big: economic, military, border. The opening of the [Russian] consulate general [in Kapan] is another step toward strengthening our positions," Seleznyov noted.
Taking into account the fact that earlier Iran opened a consulate general in Kapan, the Russian diplomat stated that the Russian side would be happy to collaborate with Iranian colleagues as well.
