Eastern forces of Libya under the command of General Khalifa Haftar supported the proposal to create a new interim government, Reuters reports.
The Libyan National Army (LNA), led by Haftar, said it supported the recommendations of the Libyan Joint Committee 6+6, a group of two legislative chambers that proposed a new election law. LNA urged both chambers to come to an agreement on the formation of a new government.
The recommendations of the commission were accepted by some parts of the country's divided political system, but rejected by others.
It remains to be seen whether they can eventually become the basis for elections, and Prime Minister Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah in Tripoli will certainly oppose the formation of any new government before the elections.
Critics of the Libyan political elite believe that it does not intend to hold elections that could push it out of power and is more focused on controlling the government in Tripoli and accessing state resources.
